Every weekend we gather cool international expats living in Randstad and head off on a short exciting trip to experience the joys of the local landscape whilst meeting other professionals and likeminded people. Our travel mates are typically from the tech and creative industries, as well as the startup world, including founders and VCs. A lot of cool companies moved to Randstad in 2022, so we regularly welcome guys from newly flourishing international businesses. This route is to the south of the Netherlands, to the picturesque hills and the magical German village of Monschau with stops along the way. At each stop, we will walk, enjoy beautiful views and meet iconic Russian-speaking locals who will tell us why they chose the province of Limburg over overpopulated Holland. In Localie we go on trips in small groups - to maintain a special friendly and trusting atmosphere 😉 Most often, we take a spacious minivan - there are 9 seats plus me. This format is the most comfortable and interesting. But if the group is smaller and even cosier, then we will take an electric car out there.
In the morning I will wake up bright and early and whip round the Randstad and pick you all up from your front door ❤️ Depending on your particular address, I'll aim to pick you up before 8am. However the closer you are to our destination point, then the later I will head to your house. The exact time will be fixed when the whole group has been formed. A typical order is as follows. First I'll head to Rotterdam, then The Hague, Leiden and Haarlem. After that I'll drive up to Amsterdam, and finally followed by Utrecht. In most cases though we pick people up from one or two population centres. We try to be as flexible as possible
Our first stop is 2 hours away. We will use this time to get to know each other and tell each other the stories of how we moved and settled into the Netherlands. Since there will be 9 of us, the time will fly by unnoticed!
Within 2hours from Randstad we will get to the southernmost and most special province of the Netherlands - Limburg. Here we will stop for lunch and walk around the town of Sittard. The population of Sittard is only 37,500 people. Two features stand out in particular here: 1️⃣ The city is located on the very border with Germany, and along its streets, right from the centre on foot you can quietly step into to the neighbouring German city. 2️⃣ Noya Vladimir Trembovolsky lives in Sittard — the founder of the NL Startup Program community and a high-tech startup with patents and grants for half a million euros 🤑 Noya Vladimir loves Sittard and Limburg. He will show and tell us about why he chose this particular city to live in NL. We will find out how Limburg ticks, and we will also reveal its advantages in addition to the cost of housing - which is 3-4 times cheaper there than Amsterdam prices 😉
After walking around Sittard, we will immediately cross the Dutch-German border and in a little over an hour, by lunchtime, we will have arrived in Monschau. Monschau is an incredible medieval village nestled in the high hills in the Eifel National Park. Here one absolutely has to walk, take snaps and soak up the atmosphere. Monschau is as if you have teleported into another reality. In addition to incredibly beautiful views, we will be able to visit the most unusual coffee shop on the planet - they roast coffee beans and, at the same time, brew beer! Sometimes founders mix their two crafts together and make coffee beer! I'm sure very few of you will have tried such a beverage before. 😉 Even in the suburbs of Monschau, we will encounter one of the most unusual legacies of the First World War. Right at the entrance to the city is the famous Vehnbahn - the German railway, which, together with the several meters of land adjacent to it, was given to Belgium as a result of the Treaty of Versailles, and thus cuts this region of Germany into two parts with a narrow strip-enclave of Belgium. The railway was taken out of use and dismantled at the beginning of the 21st century. Now in its place is one of the most famous cycling routes with a length of 125 kilometers. At the same time, the bike path is Belgium, but if you step only a couple of meters away from it in any direction - and you are in Germany. The parties are still arguing about the ownership of this road.
Travel time to Amsterdam is 3 hours. We will return home around 8 pm. On the way back, we exchange impressions and post tons of photos and videos from the trip on social networks. By the way, if you make a comment or a post, tell us about your impressions on Instagram and tag our @localie.co account - we will send you a promo code with a discount for your next trip 😉

The Founder of Localie
I’m truly a world citizen and it’s hard to explain my origin. Being born in Ukraine, raised there, I moved to Russia when I was 13, with my parents relocation. I never felt at home in Russia. However I found some good friends, and tons of inspiration there. With my constant dream to leave Russia, I found myself becoming a world citizen. When I was 20, I went for 4 months to USA on the internship program. There I lived at OBX in North Carolina. High five if you know what I’m talking about 😉 A...
